Activites

Living Well with Dementia (LWWD) runs a number of activity groups that are inclusive of people with dementia. For access to services and activities, the LWWD referral form must be completed by a member of the Primary Care team.

Exercise Group

LWwD runs a number of weekly exercise programmes which are of great benefit to people with dementia. The purpose of the programmes is to maintain mobility, dexterity and the skills needed to carry out activities of daily living such as washing and dressing. The programmes are suited to each person’s level of ability and are run with the help of Siel Bleu –a non-profit organisation that promotes appropriate physical activity for those that wish to maintain or increase their physical and mental health. sielbleu.ie.

The atmosphere is great with a lot of peer support, cognitive stimulation and social interaction. There is no charge to attend but a small contribution can be made towards refreshments.

Bridge Club

Many Bridge players step back from their favourite pastime when diagnosed with dementia. Bridge is a skill which remains with many people even with moderate to advanced dementia. We would encourage people to stay connected with their own club. Where this is not possible, LWwD organises a small Bridge Club, supported by volunteers.

Musical Memories Choirs

The Musical Memories choirs are especially helpful to people affected by dementia. The purpose of the choirs is to give people an opportunity to come together in a relaxed environment and reconnect through music. Music and singing help lift your mood, provide cognitive stimulation and support social interaction. The groups are led by a Choral Director. There is no element of competition or performance.

There are currently 2 choirs operating on Tuesday and Saturday:
Art Group - The Pleasure of Art

A friendly group for people with dementia to attend with or without a family carer. A trained art facilitator leads projects for the group to enjoy at their own pace.

There is a €5 charge for each class.

Well-Dance: movement to music

Dance has been shown to increase self-awareness, encourage social interaction, help with depression, provide fun and healthy self-expression. It has also been proven to maintain and at times improve memory and cognitive function.

'Well-dance' is a very light-hearted form of exercise with fabulous musicality and imagery which also improves mobility, mood and balance confidence.

There is a €5 charge for each class.
